ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM

ACCELERATED READER

Accelerated Reader helps all children become better readers, from students with special needs to those who are gifted and talented.  When children read books at an appropriate level, they experience success.

Bethany's teachers work with children to set appropriate goals based on each child’s reading level. STAR assessments are given once each trimester.  The results are used to determine each student's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to set a reading level range for books the students may choose to read.  ZPD is the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration or loss of motivation. Your child will receive a ZPD range after taking a STAR Reading assessment, or teachers and librarians can use their best professional judgment to determine a ZPD.

STAR ASSESSMENTS

STAR assessments empower Bethany's teachers to focus on what matters most—individualizing instruction to accelerate learning for all students. AR point goals depend on how much time they read and their reading level. Monitoring AR points earned by children and comparing them to the guideline values enables your child’s teacher to determine how well your child is using the time provided for reading practice.

Students read a selected book chosen from our school library, the public library, as well as home collections and book clubs. By clicking on the Library World link you can see what books we have available in the Bethany Library. The user name is bls.  You do not need a password.  If the Call Number begins with AR that book has an Accelerated Reading Quiz. The numbers following tell you the reading level or ZPD. To help find out if books from the public library or your own collection have an AR quiz visit www.arbookfind.com.

When students are finished reading their chosen book, they take a comprehension quiz on that book.  Depending on their success level on the quiz, they are given a point value score (100% on the quiz equals the point value of the book.  Less than 100% receives a reduced point value score.) You can monitor your child’s progress by clicking on the Home Connect link and entering your child’s user name and password. Here you will be able to see what quizzes your child has taken, how well they did on each quiz and how they are progressing toward their individual goals.

Students who go above and beyond their individualized goal may earn an "AR Hall of Fame" award at the end of the school year.
